Sprain
A sprain is often associated with the muscle when in fact it is an injury to the ligament (Soft tissue that attaches bone to bone). Just like a strain, a sprain can occur due to over-stretching resulting in a tear or rupture and can be the result of sporting accidents, falls, over exercise and slipping. Common sprain areas include the carpal (Wrist) and Tarsal (Ankle) joints and Stifle (Knee, Cruciate Ligament).
Grades of Sprain:

Grade 1 - Minor tear or stretch of the ligament. Minimal damage with mild to moderate symptoms.
Grade 2 - Moderate sprain with a partial tear or stretch. Obvious pain, swelling and lameness.
Grade 3 - Complete rupture where the bones are no longer attached by the ligament. Extreme pain, swelling and non weight bearing. Surgery may be required.
Grade 4 - Complete rupture, however a small fragment of bone is removed with the ligament during the break. pain, swelling and Non weight bearing. Surgery is required.
